Safety is sexy

As with any sexual activity, especially ones that involve use of restraints or a tool on another person, there are some rules for safe play that should always be followed

  • Consent
We suggest the F.R.I.E.S. model of consent. In short, consent should be: Freely given. Reversible. Informed. Enthusiastically given. Specific.

  • Practice Aftercare.
This can include things specific to the type of play, such as cleaning the skin after using edible body paint or applying lotion after impact play, as well as more general things such as cuddling, having something to eat and drink, and reflecting on the experience

  • Alcohol, THC, and other mind-altering substances.
There is a reason most sex clubs limit participants to a two-drink maximum. Being fully present and fully in your mind and body is the foundation of any positive intimate experience. While playing with new sensations and new power roles, you’ll want to truly grasp the full spectrum of the experience. We completely understand the desire to feel more relaxed with a glass of wine or a THC gummy, just make sure you aren’t dulling your senses or your ability to be mindful and safe.

  • Candle Play Safety

It’s important to not grab just any old candle. You should opt for candles that are specifically designed for wax play as they burn at a lower temperature. For beginners, we recommend starting with low-temperature candles. These are candles with a lower melting point that have the ability to cool before their wax makes contact with your skin to avoid burns and unnecessary pain.

We suggest you practice on your own hand before experimenting on your partner’s skin, to get a better idea of how quickly to drip the wax, the best distance to hold the candle from the skin, and so forth.

As well, it’s crucial to keep a candlestick holder or fire-safe cup or bowl on hand, to rest your candle in once it has been lit, as well as after the flame has been snuffed out. You can also put the lit tip into a bowl of water if you feel it is necessary (this can also help eliminate any smoke). Be sure to snip the wick down to 1/4-inch before relighting it next time, to avoid excessive smoking!
